Who’d've ever thunk it: American Idol, that ultimate cool show (and not much for punk or alternative rock) has made Emo hair cool. They’ve done it through the help of fan favorite David Cook. Cook is one of the final few and a native of Blue Springs, MO. This 25 year old has boasted several looks on the show, but the most consistent one has been the frequent appearance of his Emo hair.

Cook has never identiified himself as an Emo on the show, but some of the song he has sung have had a hard enough edge to them that he could easily sing songs that would appeal to the Emo community. At the very least, he has brought the look to the mainstream. Now if only Simon would join him he’s already got the black wardrobe down pat!

You can’t really point at one haircut for girls and say “This is what Emo means,” because one of the key points in Emo style is to be individual. But there are some common elements to keep in mind. First, make sure you grow your hair all out; this will allow the side parts and front of your hair to cover a good chunk of your face. After it’s at a decent size, dye your hair black.

Then, to give you a true Emo look, you need to straighten your hair with a professional-strength straightener. If possible, try to get long layers from around halfway down your head, and short layers the rest of the way up. Finally, you can style it. This is where you achieve individuality, as there are any number of ways to shape the hair once you’ve achieved the true Emo basics. You can even include accessories like hairbands or butterfly clips!

So what’s the well-dressed Emo wearing now that the weather’s warming up? Most Emos keep an ample supplies of vintage t-shirts–always a bit tight-fitting. They should also show a bit of wear, and a funny slogan is nice.  Also include a few “ringer” shirts (t-shirts with the circular collar area done in a dark color).  These were popular among the mainstream population in the late 1970s, and among Emos there’s a resurgence in their popularity in the 2000s.  Remember though: Like the vintage t-shirt, this should look a few years old–never new. As for pants, something dark is always in good Emo style. And for shoes, go with  Converse Chuck Taylors; they’re considered always in style as alternative wear, and most Emos love them. But whatever shoes you wear, remember: For the true Emo, it’s American-made only, please.

How to Create an Emo Hairstyle in 2008

Since, by definition, Emos are nonconformists, it’s hard to define what “the Emo hairstyle” looks like. However, to achieve the Emo look, there are certain characteristics that you should consider incorporating. 1) Regarding length: Men typically keep their hair longer than other guys, especially around the ears and front, in order to achieve the face-cover effect. Women’s length is either quite short or quite long–but rarely just “medium” length. 2) Color: Traditionally, Emos have dyed their hair coal black. More recently though, other colors have become popular. The rule now is anything outrageous: stark blonde, pink, blue, bright red, etc. Some will even opt for multi-color. 3) Bangs: The one thing that is almost universal are the swept bangs, that usually cover a large part of the face. Once you incorporate these three elements, it’s up to you to come up with your own unique variation on the Emo theme.

Like any other style, Emo clothing styles vary from season to season. So what’s in style this year? Some holdovers from previous years that are style in fashion include v-necks, Quicksilver jeans, striped polo shirts, and of course, Converse and Van shoes.  Also, checkerboard patterns are still popular.  Pirate skulls are a fairly new trend, due to the popularity of the various pirate movies that have been released in the past few years (Black skulls for boys, pink for girls).

One thing that has picked up steam is the idea of colored shoelaces. Some go as far as to make them mismatched.  T-shirts are good additions to your wardrobe, as long as they have a funny slogan that you feel makes a statement about you.  Studded belts are maintaining their popularity. And for girls, consider adding a long, lean tube top to your closet.

For the true emo, hair is more than just a style–it’s a statement of who they are. The emo, at his or her core, is a sensitive person who is open to his or her emotions (For those of you out of the loop, “emo” is short for “emotional”). The emo tells the world who they are often by their dark clothes–and yes, by emo hairstyles. So how do you get that emo hair look? First, go to the styling salon and ask them to razor cut your hair. This is the first step to an emo look Then explain that you want your bangs kept long, so that it barely covers the upper part of your face. Finally, buy some straightening gel (This is NOT the same as styling gel; gel will just make your hair look greasy). Put the cream on your hair and then straighten it in typical emo fashion. Now you’ve joined the few proud, sensitive ones with emo hairstyles.
